My friend Teddy Nicholas recently sent me the severely talented Rebecca Black’s youtubemusicvideo for her debut single(?),  “Friday” and oh my god.you guys. Seriously. oh my god. If you haven’t seen it yet, please, do yourself a favor. As one pre-pubescent Youtuber has commented: SHE IS THE VOICE OF A GENERATION!

I’m like obsessed. Not only is this bad…it’s like, so bad that it passes the point of being so bad it’s good or so bad it’s enjoyable in it’s badness. It’s  like…in Teddy’s words, in a undefinable category of it’s own. The video, which  has already exceeded 2 million views on YouTube is produced by some kind of independent “recording company”called Ark Music Factory based in LA. My guess is that they’re a production company who specializes in creating music videos for kids with really nice richparents for their birthdays or something. Maybe they charge a fee to clients who get “signed” to their label which covers production costs- sort of like those “modeling agencies” who go around the midwest on “model searches” and charges an “agency fee” for the kids  who “make it?” Who knows.  A business like that would probably be extremely lucrative regardless though, since every adolescent girl’s “be all-end all” is to become a famous pop-star these days. And the younger a person is when they acquire their ten minutes of fame, the more it is valued. Kid shows like Disney’s Hannah Montana and Sunny with a Chance send the toxic message that fame  is the ultimate dream and that any extraordinary teen with no training or musical talent can achieve it ( as long as they are good consumers that worship materialistic goods). The relationships between the birth of the technological boom, the easy access to pseudo-voyeuristic websites, and the desires that this revolution has embedded in our brains and hearts is evident within artists like Rebecca Black.  If the  new American dream is to be noticed, there’s going to be a lot of haunting footage of “the journey to the dreams” for years to come. I’m so glad the internet wasn’t around when I was twelve (or that I didn’t have wealthy parents who paid for my music videos) because I too definitely would have put all of the embarrassing songs I wrote crying in my bedroom alone on Youtube.  And it would have haunted me for the rest of my life.

Lyrics: Rebecca Black: Friday

Yeah, Ah-Ah-Ah-Ah-Ah-Ark
Oo-ooh-ooh, hoo yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah-ah-ah
Yeah-ah-ah
Yeah-ah-ah
Yeah-ah-ah
Yeah, yeah, yeah

7am, waking up in the morning
Gotta be fresh, gotta go downstairs
Gotta have my bowl, gotta have cereal
Seein’ everything, the time is goin’
Tickin’ on and on, everybody’s rushin’
Gotta get down to the bus stop
Gotta catch my bus, I see my friends (My friends)

Kickin’ in the front seat
Sittin’ in the back seat
Gotta make my mind up
Which seat can I take?

It’s Friday, Friday
Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend, weekend
Friday, Friday
Gettin’ down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend

Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Fun, fun, fun, fun
Lookin’ forward to the weekend

7:45, we’re drivin’ on the highway
Cruisin’ so fast, I want time to fly
Fun, fun, think about fun
You know what it is
I got this, you got this
My friend is by my right
I got this, you got this
Now you know it

Kickin’ in the front seat
Sittin’ in the back seat
Gotta make my mind up
Which seat can I take?

[Chorus]

It’s Friday, Friday
Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend, weekend
Friday, Friday

Gettin’ down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend

Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Fun, fun, fun, fun
Lookin’ forward to the weekend

[Bridge]

Yesterday was Thursday, Thursday
Today i-is Friday, Friday (Partyin’)
We-we-we so excited
We so excited
We gonna have a ball today

Tomorrow is Saturday
And Sunday comes after…wards
I don’t want this weekend to end

[Rap Verse]

R-B, Rebecca Black
So chillin’ in the front seat (In the front seat)

(C’mon) Passin’ by is a school bus in front of me
Makes tick tock, tick tock, wanna scream
Check my time, it’s Friday, it’s a weekend
